About the Engineering Lead Role

We’re looking for an outstanding Engineering leader to join Float and lead a team that’s building the best finance platform in Canada. Float’s a product-led business, and as an Engineering Lead, you’ll have complete ownership of your area. If you'd like to know more about Engineering @ Float, read up on our Engineering Principles.

About the Role

  • You will split your time between being a key hands-on contributor (which includes developing new features, maintaining and improving existing systems, and participating in design and code reviews), delivering against Float’s product roadmap, and leading a team of talented engineers

  • You’ll own end-to-end engineering delivery outcomes for your product vertical, overseeing the product development process, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of new features and improvements and partnering with others to prioritize and address technical challenges

  • You’ll represent engineering for your area of the product in all key meetings, collaborating with key stakeholders, including our co-founders, customers, and internal partners, to understand their needs, gather feedback, and incorporate it into the product roadmap and development process as appropriate

  • You’ll ensure the technical integrity of the product, code quality, and adherence to best practices. You’ll be involved in coding, reviewing, debugging, and troubleshooting

  • You’ll gain a deep understanding of our customers and their challenges through our customer discovery stages and translate that knowledge into our product roadmap and technical design

  • You’ll be responsible for your product vertical’s customer experience, quality and product development.

  • You’ll help to recruit, develop and retain amazing talent to Float

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • You’ll lead a team of engineers through the product development lifecycle

  • You’ll ship high quality code to production in an iterative fashion while meeting key product deadlines

  • You’ll work with your team to design high throughput and stable systems

  • You’ll talk to customers to understand their needs

  • You’ll identify, analyze, and mitigate risks that could affect project timelines or product quality

  • You’ll develop, implement, and refine engineering processes and practices to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality

  • You’ll work with the engineering leadership team to scale Float’s organization

About You

Here’s what sets you up for success at Float:

  • You Put Customers First, Always. You care deeply about delivering meaningful value. Whether you're building internal systems or customer-facing features, you're always thinking about how to make life better for our users.

  • You Act Like an Owner. You take responsibility for outcomes, step up to challenges, and seek solutions proactively—doing what’s best for the business, not just your role.

  • You Think Big and Move Fast. You’re energized by building from 0 to 1. You’re not afraid to challenge the status quo, experiment quickly, and learn as you go.

  • You Constantly Learn and Grow. You’re hungry to improve your craft and open to feedback. You bring a growth mindset to everything you do.

  • You Raise the Bar. You care about doing things well and efficiently. You balance speed with rigor and always look for ways to improve how we work.

  • You Win as a Team. You’re a generous collaborator who values communication, context, and shared wins. You lift others up and help make the team stronger.

In addition to living our values, you are:

  • Experienced. To be successful in this role, we’re looking for 7-10+ years of B2B SaaS, startup experience. Experience with business payments, banking and finance is a bonus. You’ve led an engineering team at a growing startup, have experienced the growing pains of scaling a product and growing an engineering team and want to join another early stage company to do it all again.

  • Motivated by being a leader. You have previous experience leading teams of engineers, and partnering with product managers, product designers, product ops, data analysts, etc. An excellent cross-functional communicator with the ability to influence multiple stakeholders, you’re able to navigate any natural tensions between various groups.

  • Product-obsessed. You care about the details with a strong data-driven metrics approach. No stranger to an Agile environment, you’ve managed product boards, prioritized engineering decisions, and understand software concepts, backend systems, and API specs. You love the craft of shipping software and take pride in the outcome.

  • An owner. You take complete ownership and accountability of delivery and outcomes. You translate business requirements into technical specifications, overseeing the development process, and ensuring successful deployment. You are ready and willing to make tough decisions to achieve broader business goals and outcomes.

  • Eager to continue your own learning. Scrappy and voracious, you want to know the ‘why’ behind every answer. You’re a creative thinker who can combine quantitative thinking with a great technical design. Finding creative ways to work through obstacles is fun for you.

  • A strong believer in putting customers first. You’ll advocate endlessly for our customers, and have a natural curiosity to understand their needs and are obsessed with customer research. You’re also a confident writer and speaker and can convey the needs of our customers and their technical requirements succinctly and clearly.

  • Action oriented. You are ready to roll-up your sleeves to get building and want to see your technical design in our product. You have an understanding of how long it takes to get a technical idea into a product and know who to work with and how to get it implemented - you are comfortable with overseeing all aspects of a project.

  • Familiar with our market. You’ve worked with accounting/finance related products, or have worked closely with finance leaders. You’re commercially focused with an understanding of the market and the business we’re in. You’re no stranger to an ROI mindset.

This may not be the role for you if:
