About the role:
CHANEL is seeking a visionary Senior Manager, Data Engineering to lead our BI+CRM Data Engineering team, shaping the future of data-driven client experiences across our global luxury retail ecosystem. Based in New York City, this leader will architect, scale, and optimize the data platforms that underpin our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and omnichannel engagement strategies. This leader will serve as the bridge between technology and business, partnering with CRM, Marketing, Analytics, and IT stakeholders to deliver robust, innovative, and compliant data solutions that unlock strategic value.
This Senior Manager, Data Engineering role requires a minimum of 5 years of technical data engineering using SQL, Python, BigQuery, GCP, Azure, Power BI, etc. with source system (POS, ecommerce) and target systems experience (Salesforce, Marketing Cloud, BI tools). Must have passion for people management and leveraging technical mastery with a mindset that’s both curious and creative. Strategic Leadership & Vision
Define and drive the long-term data engineering strategy for CHANEL’s CRM data platforms, championing data as a core business asset
Set the vision for scalable, high-performance data architectures and pipelines, leveraging GCP (BigQuery), Salesforce Data Cloud (CDP), Reltio MDM and advanced analytics to support personalization, campaign execution, and reporting
Guide the evolution of our Data as a Service model, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture and business priorities
Operational Excellence & Data Governance
Oversee and be involved in the design, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise-grade data pipelines, ETL processes, and data models, ensuring reliability, integrity, and availability of customer data across all channels
Act as data governance Data Custodian within the Client Data Domain, championing data accuracy, privacy, security, and regulatory compliance
Lead initiatives to elevate data quality, identity resolution, segmentation, and data stewardship practices
Cross-Functional Partnership
Partner with stakeholders in CRM, Marketing, Analytics, and IT to anticipate business needs and translate them into robust technical solutions
Foster collaboration across business analysts, dashboard developers, and service owners to deliver actionable insights and enable self-service BI at scale
Serve as a key advisor to the CRM architect and enterprise architects, providing strategic input on technology selection, roadmaps, and solution design
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Build, mentor, and inspire a high-performing team of data engineers, architects, and analysts, cultivating a culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous learning
Lead by example in technical mastery, stakeholder engagement, and cross-functional communication
Champion knowledge sharing through internal masterclasses, best practice sessions, and community building within CHANEL’s data and analytics organization
Innovation & Transformation
Drive the adoption of emerging technologies (BigQuery ML, Vertex AI, Data Catalog, DLP) to advance CHANEL’s data engineering capabilities and unlock new opportunities for personalization and analytics

What you will bring to the team:
Demonstrated executive experience leading enterprise-scale data engineering functions, ideally within retail, luxury, or omnichannel commerce.
Proven expertise in architecting and governing complex data ecosystems across GCP (BigQuery), Salesforce Data Cloud (CDP), and related analytics platforms.
Deep experience with data acquisition (SQL, Python, APIs), data modeling, ETL/ELT pipeline orchestration, and advanced analytics.
Mastery of data governance, privacy, and compliance frameworks, with the ability to operationalize best practices globally.
Strong business acumen, with a track record of influencing senior stakeholders and translating business strategy into technical execution.
Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to attract, develop, and retain top data engineering talent.
Outstanding communication and change management abilities, adept at aligning diverse teams and driving transformational outcomes.
A passion for innovation, continuous improvement, and elevating the role of data in delivering exceptional client experiences.
Experience in data acquisition (e.g., SQL, Python, Web API, SFTP, File Directories), data manipulations (e.g., JSON, XML, CSV) and structuring data using BigQuery, SQL Procedures, Scheduled Queries, Storage Buckets, Pub/Sub topics, Cloud Functions, and Cloud Scheduling
Familiarity with Google Analytics, Firebase, and corresponding GA BigQuery data export schemas (i.e., Nested data structures in BigQuery), and implement advanced SQL coding including aggregations/partitions/window functions
Thorough understanding of data design and dimensional data modeling concepts
Aptitude to build and maintain local Python virtual environments, supporting local development and testing with Python IDEs (e.g., Spyder, PyCharm, etc.), and experience with using the Google Cloud SDK and Google Cloud ‘gsutil’ command in local environment is a plus
Exposure to Microsoft BI SQL Server Agent Job/Step scheduling architecture and Microsoft SSIS (dtsx) package development with Visual Studio is desired
Functional and technical experience in Advanced Analytics (e.g., BigQuery ML, Vertex AI) and Data Governance (e.g., Data Catalog, DLP) is a plus
Ability to contribute to projects for end-to-end delivery with minimal guidance but also influence the business on best practices and solutions
Position Logistics:
Position based in New York City – CHANEL HQ in Midtown Manhattan
Role requires a minimum of 3 days in-person office presence in the New York City office with some occasional presence in our Piscataway, New Jersey office
Minimum of 5 years of multidisciplinary professional experience with an emphasis on building and maintaining data pipelines in Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
Required experience in retail, omnichannel ecommerce environment with a preference for Luxury Goods
Required experience with SQL, Python, BigQuery, GCP, Power BI, Azure with CRM and CDP focus
Salesforce Marketing Data Cloud, Marketing Cloud experience highly recommended
Bachelor’s degree (or technical knowledge and experience) in Information Management, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, or Analytics/Data Science; preferred
Compensation:
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $87,500 - $160,000. Base salary is one component of the total compensation for this position. Other forms of variable pay [may/will] be offered for this position. Other components [may/will] include bonus potential, benefits, and/or perks.
